When Is the Best time to plant Grass Seed?

Hi, I am needing to plant some grass and I need to know what is the best time of the year to do so, and what kind of seed do I need to purchase???? I purchased Rebel Pro 3 years ago and it did good in the shadey area's, but I need it for lot's of sunlight and low traffic area... The rebel was supposed to be for all conditions, but it isn't the best in the world. it still isn't full blades and even though it has great coverage, it just isn't full, and I have fertilized it and limed it and everything. So Now I need to add something to it, to make my grass thicker and greener. Any Suggestions will be greatly appricated... Also, i will be seeding a area that has not been seeded. And I would like to get the effect of a nice thick green lawn... What do I need to Buy??? I live in West va if that helps with the zones

  1. try 5 star dwarf fescue, it works in sun or shade and is drought resistant. will grow nicly with the rebel 3. a dwarf fescue needs alot less mowing. ive used it for years , never had any problems.
  2. Fescue has to be planted in the cool of the spring or fall. So now is the time. You may want to fertilize with just pure Nitrogen 34-0-0. Do monthly treatments during the growing seasons. If you haven't had your soil analyzed in a while, you may want to take a sample to your local Ag Extension office. They'll tell you exactly what you need.
  3. Seed anytime thru the winter. Snow & rain helps the seed to work into the soil and provides moisture for it to sprout when weather turns warm. Seed now!
  4. I would make sure that any fertilizer you put down have a high phosphorus content, as compared to the nitrogen. Like about 2 times as much phosphorus as nitrogen - so a 3-6-0 or 6-12-0 or anything where the second number is about twice what the first number is. Probably you won't be able to find anything with 0 potassium (the third number), but look for something with less potassium than nitrogen, so like a 3-6-2 or 6-12-4 or something. Apply the fertilizer so you're putting down 1/4 to 1/2 pound of nitrogen per 1,000 square feet. In West VA, you can plant the grass anytime from now on. Now is a good time to plant.
  5. Hi: I agree with the answer of Fescue. This is a great grass seed to grow in sun or shade. It will come in thick and full. I would recommend to rent an aerator and use this machine over your entire lawn. This is a hand held machine that has a round tank. There are spikes around the tank. You fill it two thirds with water and walk it around your lawn. The spikes will put tiny holes in your ground where the seeds can get into the soil. Kentucky Blue Grass is also a good grass seed and will also plush up. Once you have seeded your lawn, lay down some hay and make sure you water it properly. The Fescue or Kentucky Blue Grass should take hold and you will have a great looking lawn. Good luck to you. I will link you to the outdoor feature section of my website. There is an article on sod versus seed, which you might be able to get some information on. I will also link you to the site map, as this page has everything that is on the website. Browse through and see if there are any other articles, tips or techniques that may come in handy with this project or any other landscape project. Have a great day!
