The Grass Doctor

How do I start a new lawn?

I live in upstate NY andI have an area of about 150 square feet that is covered by river rocks (about 2 inches each). There is both sun and shade in the area. I want a lawn in this area but do not want to remove the rocks as it is a lot of work. I plan to cover the area with lawnscape fabric, put down dirt, and a small layer of top soil. I will spread the grass seed and fertilizer and cover it with straw. Will this method work or is there a better way? Should I use lime or peat moss, if so at what stage?

  1. Use the peat moss to cover the new seed. Everything else sounds pretty good. Still a lot of hard work, better you than me.
  2. You should mix in the peat moss with the top soil. You want 3 or more inches of the resulting mix before you spread the seed or lay turf. Test the PH to find out if you need to add Lime. If the PH s fine, you don't need lime, ash or anything else. I would do 1 part compost/manure, 1 part top soil and 3 parts peat moss. Mix a test batch, and if the soil seems too light increase the compost. If it's too heavy, add more peat. You're on the right track. Just be sure to get a "shade" seed mixture.
  3. I think removing the rock may be better in the long run or you will need alot of dirt on top. Peat moss with top soil and then roll your lawn to pack it. PS you should consider installing a good sprinkler system as part of this plan. Placement of the sprinklers are very important or you will end up with alot of dry spots that will be brown. Also drainage should be a consideration before you start. Take a look in the library, there are alot of books on lawns and landscaping, its always easier to do it once the right way
  4. You are on the right move and idea to start with your lawn. The best combine peat moss and the top soil. Think of drainage at early stage.
