The Grass Doctor

What are some safety and functional tips for mowing the lawn?

This summer, I'm going to start a lawn-mowing business. I am going to start this spring so that I become good at it by summer. I'm 14, and a girl. Although I am fairly strong, I still am not looking forward to push-mowing. Our mower is self-propelled with the handle that you release to stop it.

  1. Do not wear open toe shoes (like sandals) always wear closed shoes. (sneakers)
  2. Long pants a sneakers...definately. I would also invest in a good pair of leather work gloves.
  3. practice on your own lawn, so you don't cutt your toe's off on someone else's lawn!!!
  4. Wear goggles to protect your eyes and long socks and good shoes to protect your feet from injury and insects. Use plenty of sunblock and reapply regularly. Have set prices for mowing, edging for the size of the yard. Make a schedule as to when you will offer your services. Mow the outside square first then mow straight across and back evenly.. If you need to mow near trees, do that first. Change mowing directions every forth visit or so to help maintain a healthy lawn. Advise your customers to water after. Don't mow the lawn too short as the sun will burn the grass and make weed seeds easier to penetrate the soil. Have fun and much success with your new business.
  5. a quick walk over the lawn to remove dangerous objects
