The Grass Doctor

I applied fertilizer and lime to my lawn in December. When should I do it again?

I live in North Carolina and I have hybrid bermuda grass with some fescue. Should I apply lime now or wait again until December? Should I apply fertilizer now? It's been very warm here and the grass is already growing very well.

  1. Just after Easter is a good time for this.Useing a high nitrogen content fertilizer will give you a quick green start.Be sure to follow application advise.See link below.
  2. I think it would be wise to test your soil before putting more lime down. Get a pH test kit at a garden center and find out if you need it. If your pH is between 5.5 and 7.0, I wouldn't put lime down, but maybe gypsum. Gypsum provides calcium and sulphur but doesn't affect pH. It also gelps break up clay. If you feel you need more fertilizer, apply at a light rate. Your grass hasn't had much of a chance to take up what you spread in December.
  3. Test your soil I would say twice a year, but that's up to you, don't over fetilize it.
