The Grass Doctor

Whats the best for us?

I've had a large lot from my family for a long time...all grass and almost 40 acres. I'm building on it and my companion, who loves large lawns, wants a good tractor and mower to keep it nice and groomed and she's good at it. We have a 42 inch craftsman ( WAY too small) that she says sucks and won't do it. LOL We looked at a johndeer and a kubota both with 3 big hydraulicaly raised and lowered decks. They are both very expensive. Which one is better and would they let me add the cost into the financing of the house I'm building as an essential piece of equipment to maintain my property? And YES, albeit very cute and petite, she's VERY capable of handling heavy equipment! LOL The house isn't going to be very big (2870 sq ft) and the land has a small pond that covers a little patch of it. All things said, money is an issue...I don't want to go broke buying a tractor and mower. I also know Kubota has one of the best track records for reliability.

  1. Both are very good pieces of equipment. The John Deere fans are going to be more like a religious cult. The biggest question to ask yourself is how adept are you at performing repairs on the unit? If not, then go with the one that has a local dealer with a quality repair department. As for the financing, maybe, maybe not. I am sure a local bank could come up with a creative financing package. BTW, congrats on finding a woman who will offer to mow that big patch.
  2. Both Kubota and John Deere make quality machinery. The size of the unit you should by should be based on how much you are going to mow and how often. If you plan to do the forty acres instead of the lawn, very different needs to deal with. If you have a moderate size lawn, say 10,000 SF. Then a 42" deck mower should mow the lawn okay and you may want to hire out the cutting of the acreage a couple times a year. Note that 49 acres is not refered to as a "lot." Parcel, acreage, farm, or ranch but not a lot.
  3. not sure about which tractor but with that much land, you could have a VERY nice garden.Set up a stand and sell stuff from garden to help pay for tractor
  4. Go to your local golf course and ask them if they have a used mower u might buy. They also know a lot about whats good and etc...
  5. 1. TWO OR THREE ACRES IS ENOUGH FOR A RIDING MOWER. THE REST OF THE HAY CAN BE SOLD IF IT'S ANY GOOD FOR HORSES. THEY MAY COME AND CUT IT FOR TRADE. 2. IF YOU BUY A TRACTOR(USED OR NEW) AND FARM THE PLACE AT ALL THE COUNTY AG AGENT WILL BE HAPPY TO HELP ADVISE AND PERHAPS HELP IN GETTING A LOAN TO SET UP THE FARMING BUSINESS. YOU ARE PAYING HIM. IF YOU TALK TO HIM, YOU WILL FIND THERE ARE LOTS OF POSSIBILITIES FOR YOU.
  6. u should also check out a dixie-chopper [its a lawn mower] they are one of the best for large lots
