The Grass Doctor

Does gypsum salt work to combat dead spots on lawns caused by dogs?

A friend told me it does, but not how/when to apply it...that is if it really does work.

  1. Sorry, it doesn't work. The key word was "dead". The grass roots are dead and you will have to reseed these spots. Scratch the spots and add new seed and keep wet.
  2. I've never heard that. The best thing I know to prevent dead spots on your lawn is to water the heck out of the spot where the dog peed, and then apply lime to straighten out the PH.
  3. Actually pellitized Gypsum is not a salt but it does combat salt content in the soil. If you are talking about dogs urinating on lawn, this is referred to as animal burn and it will combat that. Ask at local Garden Center if they don't have it they can probably get it. Time to apply is now, rate will be on bag but approximately 40 lbs for 100 sq. feet. Check to see if it has sulphur in it. What I get has 27% sulphur and at that rate it will make your soil more acid. May have to add some powdered lime to combat that. Apply again in 2 years.
