The Grass Doctor

What type of grass is better for full sun?

Kentucky Bluegrass, Rye grass, or Bermuda grass. I have a high traffic area lawn with full sun exposure. I want a nice soft grass that is not really itchy. I need a fine grass that can look full and look nice

  1. as long as it is in full sun plant bluegrass. Bluegrass fills itself in over time so small bare spots will fill in over time. If you're willing to fertilize and water it, it will look great.
  2. I agree go with Bluegrass. Scott's has a very good variety for full sun called Heat Tolerant Blue. It comes in thick and has lovely dark thin blades...it's a little more expensive than some of the brands but worth it.
  3. It depends on where you live. In the lower south, rye grass is a winter annual, bluegrass is a weed, and bermuda is grown for hay. We use centipede or zoysia in full sun, St. Augustine in shade. Bermuda is beautiful on golf courses, but they mow it every 3 days.
