The Grass Doctor

What kind of weed control should I use on my newly-seeded lawn?

I just re-seeded a section of yard, which was bare, with Kentucky bluegrass seed. It is coming up nicely, except for the broadleaf weeds! Is there anything I can treat the new lawn with, that will kill the weeds and not the grass? I'm finding Bishops Weed, Dandelion, Sorrell, Lambsquarters, and Thistle coming up with my Kentucky Bluegrass.

  1. the kinds you smoke!
  2. Don't put any weed control down until your new grass is at least a month old or you will burn your lawn and most likely kill the new grass.
  3. I have been using Scott's Turf Builder and it's working really well. My yard was totally burned out because of last summers drought in the US Southeast. I decided to try this instead of aerating and over seeding and all my grass has come back. It's like magic! LOL!
  4. don't control your weed smoke it
  5. Gazoo is right. However, if all or most of the grass seed has germinated and growing fine, I think you are safe to start using broadleaf weed killer. Gazoo is referring to pre-emergent weed preventer, which keeps seeds from growing, including grass seed.
  6. No. Lawnboy, Gazoo is referring to burn damage, rather than emergent issues. When they are still young and tender (like all of us once were) grass will succumb to the harsh chemicals being used on them. Give them a few more weeks to toughen up or they will perish with the weeds - 6 weeks old is the proper time to apply weed control.
  7. wait at least four mowings to do anything. Also a good idea is to wait a good month to six weeks. Personally i would get down and pick the weeds by hand. Might think i am crazy but i live on a few acres and one of them has grass. I get out every spring and pull all the creeping jenny by hand
