The Grass Doctor

What to do to keep grass green in the winter?

First time home owner! I would like for my yard not to be ugly and brown during the winter. I see so many pretty green lawns in the winter, is there a certain grass you have to plant or is it fertilizer? I live in Southeast Texas

  1. plant a cold weather grass such as rye grass or fescue. they will grow during moderately warm days and keep your lawn green. depending on where you live you may have to mow during cold weather
  2. Use Green spray-paint ! This may seem really weird but, to keep your grass perfectly green throughout the winter months, spray it with green spray paint. First try it in a small area and select the right color for your lawn. Then when your neighbors are not looking (enviromental concerns) spray the entire lawn. People will flock to ask you how you kept your lawn so green and healthy looking. Hope this helps.
  3. now is the time to work. first aerate the lawn (Rent a machine at a rental center) then rake the bare patches and loosen the soil. Then over-seed the entire lawn with a good quality seed using a rotary spreader, then fertilize with a fall blend ,water and keep moist until grass is started. next spring march/April fertilize again with a spring blend (just ask at the place you buy the fertilizer )
  4. Your choice: overseeding a warm season grass with annual rye, or seeding a cool season grass and living with brown grass in the summer. http://aggieturf.tamu.edu/answers4you/overseeding.htm
