The Grass Doctor

How much does a sprinkler system cost to install for front and backyard lawns?

This is for an average to little bit larger than avg. size lawn. The lawn has an exsisting system that is not working. The valves have been exposed for years and some of the pipes have worked up to the top of the soil and are cracked or were chewed on by dogs. So, our realtor and inspector said it would probably be easier to just replace the whole system. Someone told me $11,000 but others have said that was outrageous. Any idea? Much thanks!

  1. 4000 dollars maybe?
  2. Call around for estimates and be sure to ask questions. Estimates are usually free, get at least 3 estimates and as much information as you can.
  3. For an average size yard, you are looking at about $3500 to $5,000 depending on the number of stations, locations of sprinkler heads and how intricate your design will be (drip systems etc.). Get 3-5 estimates and be wary of contractors who ask how much their competition bid. Also, do some research and decide what brands you want such as Torro or rainbird etc. and the thickness of pvc pipe, how deep you want it trenched (check for your area if you have a frost line etc.) and tell the contractor exactly what quality and brands you expect so that you don't end up with low grade parts. REMEMBER: You should tell the contractor what kind of system YOU want rather than he/she telling you what kind you want installed rather than them telling you what kind you will get.
  4. $11,000 is outrageous, you should have a breakdown on the material. Specify that you only want professional products. I would have to say no more than $700.00 a zone a typical yard should be around 6 zones with nothing fancy. Typically contractors charge by the zone. Make sure that the zones adequate for head to head coverage with little to no water waste. I would use nothing from the old system.
