The Grass Doctor

What is the best weed killer for lawns?

I want to kill the weeds not the lawn. Any suggestions?

  1. I've had the best results with Ortho Weed-B-Gon. Use the ready-to spray bottles or concentrated form mixed with water in a pump-up sprayer and spray each weed individually (time-consuming, but it's the best way to get rid of the weeds). The kind that attaches to the end of the garden hose and is applied over the entire lawn isn't nearly as effective.
  2. I have found various sprays that are specific to lawns (kills the weeds, but not the grass) to be effective. You have to be careful about how much you use, though. Follow the directions to the letter, or you might cause some of the grass to die along with the weeds. The sprays are also quicker than a granular weed-and-feed type of product. With a spray, the weeds begin dying immediately. With the granules, the weeds stop growing for a week or two, rather than dying out immediately. They eventually do die out. But, it takes a few weeks for them to go away completely. The advantage of the granule-type weed killer, however, is that it won't kill any of the grass (it might harm new shoots, but not an established lawn) and it does contain a good fertilizer for greening up the lawn.
  3. Any weedkiller for lawns in a diy store is effective.
  4. Any product with 2-4-D in it. It's been used for a long time with homeowners and does a good job. Will not harm grass.
