The Grass Doctor

Why do people scalp their lawns when mowing?

Don't they know any better? I have tall fescue and so do my neighbors (key word is TALL) Tall fescue is suppose to be around 3-4" ....yet a lot of my neighbors cut it 2 inches or less????? and they wonder why their lawns look like hell and full of weeds.

  1. Beats me why they do it...only logical explanation is that they don't want to mow it at all. Scalp it and it'll die quick if there's no rain. I leave mine at 4-5 inches at all times. Stays green all year round!
  2. I think people do it so they won't have to mow as often. But you are right. It doesn't look good. And a lot of people just don't know any better.
  3. I agree..
  4. i think people do it out of laziness cut it shorter you dont have to cut as often...........
  5. I thoroughly agree, my mower is set at the highest setting and I never change it.
  6. Some feel that shorter is better others just don't know any better or the benefits of having it taller
  7. That's exactly right! Grass allowed to grow to 3-4" in height naturally smothers out the weeds. It is also healthier and more drought tolerant-most also over water their lawns too which makes them drought intolerant and prone to diseases-stop the water and it dies! People also fertilize their lawns too which is needless-- yaknow it's just got to be perfect !!!
  8. Probably so they don't have to cut it as often.
