The Grass Doctor

What's the best cheap grass seed?

I have a lot of lawn to seed, so I can't afford the $30/twenty lb bag Scotts stuff at wal mart or home depot. I don't need some fancy kentucky bluegrass either; I just want something that will sprout up and look like grass and not die. I saw some Barenburg annual ryegrass on google shopping for a... fair... price. Is there anything better/cheaper? Is annual ryegrass even good for a lawn or will it be dead the next year? It will be planted in Ohio.

  1. annual ryegrass lives one year and unless you let it reseed, it won't be back. See if you have a farmer's merchandise store near you. They often have various brands of grass, some the newer hybrids which will cost more of course. READ the labels especially the % nongrass seed. No grass seed is 100% seed, you are going to get nonspecies grasses and even weeds as well. You want the lowest possible weed seed%. You pay more for these prepackaged smaller containers found in home stores. When you need bulk, go to the professionals' stores.
