good grass seed? that grows fast and in shade?

my back yard is really wired cause in spots my lawn grows really long and then in others it don't grow at all....i need to know what is some good grass seed that will grow in the shade? like under trees. i have a kid play set under the trees but its like all dirt and i don't want the kids to get hurt. also when is the best time to plant grass seed i live in upstate NY its still pretty cold here and all the snow is not gone. so when will be the best time? thanks

2. fall is the first choice. late aug to oct 1st or so. Spring is acceptable. Fescues are a little more tolerant to shady areas. Any store with a seasonal dept. should have a variety of options for you. The bag will specifically say shade mix. however, be aware that under trees grass is competing for water with the root system of the tree itself. Although fescues are a little more drought tolerant you have to take this into consideration when watering. here are some good options for your area.
