The Grass Doctor

1990 chevy 2500 for $650?

It is a rebuilt engine and transmission - practically brand new. 150,000 miles. Needs new ball joints, master cylinder for the breaks, new break pads and a back window for $110. The ignition switch needs to be completely replaced (as it starts without a key) The body is in terrible shape -doesn't look pretty but it will drive and serve its purpose. It has an 8ft bed. I would also have to buy the ball for the hitch but not install a new hitch. I can do all of the work myself. It would cost me right at 1000$USD to get completely fixed. I could trade the guy my car and he would give me the truck and pay me an extra $600. Opinions? Suggestions? Should I trade with him, should I just buy it outright and fix it up? I'm looking into getting into lawn care.

  1. I would buy it straight up and work on it till you had it running how you wanted it too. Even if it turns out to be a complete piece of junk you should be able to scrap it for $500-$600
  2. keep your car and buy it straight out if thats what you want
  3. Talk him down to $500 and buy it, if you can work on cars it shouldn't be too hard. Good luck.
  4. 1 title? 2 keep you car 3 body frame 4x4 alone is worth more the 1600 / 2k have fun with your new toy
  5. First of all buy the truck outright from the seller, don't waste your time with a trade. Make sure the frame is solid and not bent or rusted out. Also take the truck for a drive and make sure the motor and 4x4 operates and shifts as it should, don't just take the sellers word on it. The problems you mentioned are easily fixed if you know how to do the work yourself. One suggestion is to get yourself a Reese hitch bolted to the rear frame, instead of using the bumper hitch. Also if the original spare tire is still mounted underneath the truck, chances are you will have to replace it. Most of the time the spare tire is dry rotted and the rim is rusted out beyond use. As another respondent stated even if the truck is total junk, you could easily get your money back selling the parts off or sell it to the scrap yard.
