The Grass Doctor

how long should I wait to water my lawn after fertilizing?

I am trying to get my grass to grow and kill clover. I know that I need a fertilizer high in nitrogen to kill the clover but how long do I wait to water the lawn after I lay down the fertilizer?

  1. Water right now!!! You don't want the fertilizer to burn the grass.
  2. How is the Fertilizer going to work unless you water it in? If it was a liquid fertilizer and you applied it by use of a hose end sprayer, then you've already watered it. If you want to water the lawn after all is said and done you can water anytime the grass needs watering.
  3. If you're using granulated fertilizer, you should water immediately after applying the fertilizer. Most granulated fertilizer will chemically burn the grass if it is in direct contact with the grass blades. If it's a spray-type fertilizer, go by the instructions on the label.
  4. The only thing your other answerers didn't mention is: water only enough to get the fertilizer off the grass and into the soil. Don't water to the point it runs off. Best of luck on the clover. If what you are doing doesn't get good results, chemical clover killers are available.
