For the vegetative state

- ......exactly that, tomato fertilizer, it is good for most plants and vegetables. Obviously there are different brands, but usually, they are all much the same. So plain old tomato fertilizer is good.
- Tomatoes like an Iron and Calcium supplement during the growing season, you can find slow release tomato stakes that feed up to four weeks that you just push in the ground around the root ball. I like these because (a) they aren’t visible to tomato admirers & (b) they feed up to four weeks so all that is required is watering and with each it’s given the supplement needed for healthy plump tomatoes. - That depends entirely on the condition of your soil. You really can burn up tomato plants with to much fertilizer. I'm an organic gardener. I use compost and liquid fish emulsion fertilizer. My plants are loaded with small tomatoes, but they've got another 5 weeks easy before they get larger and ripen.
- I like organic fertilizers for food plants. Last year I used liquid Seaweed fertilizer this year I am using liquid Seaweed+Fish Emulsion. Supposedly the fish byproducts add more nutrients than just seaweed. Either one is better than chemicals. And don't over-fertilize veggie plants, all that does is make the foliage grow more. About once a month and the veggies have time to grow rather than lots of leaves.
