- i don't think there is a shelf like on grass seed as long as you don't get it wet or moist to start it's gernination..
- IME grass seed goes bad fairly quickly. If it is five years old, you will only get about 1/4 sprout, and after 10 years you are just feeding your neighborhood birds. If you are just filling in on your existing lawn, this 5 year old seed won't matter, just spread it thick. If you are starting a new lawn, it may look ragged for a good while and you will have to spend more energy fighting weeds. Some fertilizers remain stable, and some don't. If it is a chemical fertilizer it won't rot, but you may not get some micronutrients if they have had time to react (if it had any to start with). This old fertilizer will probably help your grass still, although if it has other kinds of chemicals in it, (say) to kill weeds, those will not work so well.
