The Grass Doctor

What type of grass grows best in middle Tennessee and is resistant to drought?

I have Fescue, but it is being choked out by some kind of crab grass. I heard that Bermuda is good, but want some more input. Can I just overseed?

  1. Well, you have to kill out the crabgrass. You can't get a good lawn established if there are too many weeds. Crabgrass can easily be killed with crabgrass killers. Bermuda seed blends can work well. See an example: http://www.bermudagrass.com/info/usalawnsbermuda.html Fescue blends work best in the cooler areas of Tennessee: http://www.mastergardener.net/international/habitat-manual.html Call your county extension agent to find out the recommendation for your specific area. They have lots of good information, including how to establish the new lawn.
  2. Kentucky Bluegrass is great and beautiful for this region. Make certain that you turn over your ground really well before planting. My parents made that mistake and it has now been overtaken by wild weeks. Yuck!!! And fertilize your ground well before planting. That is a common mistake that is done while planting grass.
  3. Rye grass
