What type of grass will grow in south Louisiana?

is there a new variety of grass that grows well in shade and with little water?

  2. There are a lot of decent looking grasses for warm areas like yours. Most are pretty aggressive growers, and most don't have the fine bladed texture of cool season grasses like bluegrass and fine bladed fescues. Your local nursery, garden or home center should be able to help you. For a grass that uses less water and has some tolerance for shade you might want to look at Centipede Grass. It also does not like too much fertilizer which is a bonus. So far no grass anywhere that doesn't like to be mowed though. Bug Doc
  3. Unless things have changed recently, the vast majority of grass in South Louisiana is St Augustine. It does well in some shade but does require water and that is usually readily available.
