  1. Don't really know what your options are, but do not plant Fescue Grass for horses, Alfalfa would be really good.
  2. Kentucky Blue Timothy Orchard grass all at the same planting. Avoid Fescue as it can at times be harmful to mares in foal and can carry a toxic content in the spring when it is fresh.
  3. Depends on where in Michigan. Contact your county extension agent, or contact MSU agriculture division. I'm in Northeast Indiana, and here I would plant a mix of cool and warm weather grasses, and then bite the bullet and spend some money to add Birdfoot treefoil to my field. It's awfully expensive, but it's the best legume for pasture for horses, since it doesn't have the photosensitivity issues of white clover, or the bloat and colic issues of alfalfa. Fescue if used needs to be Endophyte free, but your extension agent will explain that to you if you clarify your field is for horses.
