The Grass Doctor

I need a creative name for a lawn care service and ideas on how to get it going:]?

My husband, John, and two friends, Brian and Xavier, have a lawn care service they've started. They've been doing it for about a year now and have built up a pretty good assortment of regular customers. They mainly mow lawns, but occasionally rake leaves, weed eat, pull trees/shrubs, trim hedges, pressure wash roofs. They also do random labor - they're helping someone build a shed this spring, they help people move, one of the trio is an electrician, some plumbing, a LOT of construction work . . . basically they do lawn care and everything else on request. They've decided to start turning this into a real business and for that, we need a business name. Something short and catchy that encompasses the whole of their business in a nutshell . . . if that's possible. Also, if you have any ideas that might help them promote their business and get it up and running, I'd love to hear them. Thanks so much! "Hahaha." That's hilarious. Serious answers only. Please don't waste my time.

  1. Bush Shavers Hahahaha.
  2. With the huge concerns we are seeing regarding the environment it would be a good idea to get "green" in the name somewhere or "earth". Consider the name being on the side of the trucks and equipment - perhaps a nice green earth logo and "First Choice Services" being the company name or some such? Since they already have a customer base you might consider really pushing for referrals. You could throw in a 4 for the price of 3 with a successful referral on the services they offer. It is interesting how sometimes someone will think that you only do one service because that is all they have ever used. Be sure that your correspondence including invoices, letterhead and emails has a breakdown of your varied services. You will likely get a response of, "I didn't know you did that!". So try to cross sell. You might enter into a partnership with a local greenhouse and they could have your business cards on hand or brochures. You would show their advertising as well. They might give you some special rates on fertilizer, etc. This could work very well with one of the larger chains that supply all the homeowner products for the home and yard as well as lumber for renovations and plumbing fixtures. Good luck!

  4. Hi, I have to say "Turner's Tips" gave a lot of good food for thought -- I'll just add a few bits and finally give you that business name you're looking for! If you do go for "First [anything]" then spell it "1st" instead of "First" -- that way you always get listed at the top of any alphabetic listing, and people see your name "1st"! Secondly, if you use a "green" angle, and have "green" or "earth" in the name, be ready to explain why you are green -- have some sort of "earth" charity you support, or use recycled or renewable products, or find a way to recycle as much of the trash as possible instead of taking it to the dump. People will be angry if they feel you're presenting yourself as "green" if it's just a name. The idea of leveraging the current customer base is really good -- tell your customers you'll give them a discount on the next job if you get any new customers from them recommending you. Make it a good discount too -- you only have to do it once for every new customer. Also, find ways you can get your customers to recommend you -- for example listing with Google local or gohuman.com lets your customers comment about your performance, right next to your listing -- that'll give new customers the confidence to hire you. Finally -- it looks like you do everything -- so why not call yourself a "group" -- that way you can have an overall name, but if you decide on having different names for the various services, you can. It also makes you look more professional and more organized. My recommendation for a name? "The Round Tuitt Group" You could have a logo which is round (like a coin), which says "Round Tuitt" on it. The idea is that you do all the jobs your customers would do if they could only get around to it ("a Round Tuitt"). Your business cards could show that logo, and say something like "You can get those jobs done -- now that you've got a Round Tuitt!" That, along with listing all your "subsidiaries" -- like "Round Tuitt Electrical Services", "Round Tuitt Gardening Services, etc ... along with the catch-all "Round Tuitt Solves Your Problems" -- and you're all set. Good luck!
