The Grass Doctor

Lawn and garden question?

The east and west sides of my house have tree's so those sides do not get much light. Is there any plants that I can grow in the flower beds on those sides of the house that require very little sun. I honestly don't care if they flower or not, green foliage is fine. Just something that will grow other than weeds. Also, On those sides of the hose the lawn does not grow well and has many bare spots which I have seeded with native grasses to no avail. Is there any specific grass seed I can start in that shady area that will grow. I have tried Scott's shady grass seed but it didn't take. I have some kind of grass that has taken over the back yard, zoysa (probably didnt spell that right) or burmuda I think. I love that part of the lawn. Its really thick and does not groe fast. It is the last to green up and stays brown for a while but it is very easy to care for. I have tried to trasplant it into the front yard but I believe nieborhood dogs keep digging it up. I keep finding dog poop every where on my lawn. A lot of it. Is there any thing I can do to keep every ones dogs form digging up the plugs I tranzplantplant. And why cant people keep there dogs from roaming. There is a leash law in this town.

  1. Hostas for your shade garden. The ones with bluish leaves grow bigger and faster. I have different kinds all along the front of the house that is shaded by large maple trees. The grass sounds like Zoyza. It is planted in plugs, so I would say, you are doing right, by transplanting that way. Now to the dogs. Even if you live out in the county there is a leash law. At least here in Ohio there is. The thing is, to get the county to enforce it. Or city if you live inside the city. Just call the animal control in your area every day until you get results. I did that every day one whole summer.
