How do you plant grass?

Can you just pour out the seeds and spread them over the bare spots? Do they need to be covered? The grass bag doesn't really say much about how to plant the seeds. I don't have a wheel barrel to mix the seeds into the dirt.

  1. You use a rake or something to scrape up the dirt so that it is loose. Then you sprinkle the seeds over the dirt area. Then you water them, and if you have some loose burlap you place that over the area so that the dirt doesn't dry out and just blow away. If you don't have burlap you can leave the dirt exposed, but make sure you water it and don't step on it.
  2. You can do as Ralph said, with the burlap. Or put hay over it. Are the spots large or spread out? If spread out you can "over seed". Put some of the seed in a paper sack, with the edges folded over to make it more sturdy or in a spare bowl, if you don't have any thing else. Grab a hand full and fling it out like you're throwing a Frisbee.(You know, thumb towards your stomach and flick your wrist back?) This will scatter the seed. Then just water and add a feeder/fertilizer, like Scotts Turf Builder.
