The Grass Doctor

What type of rye grass should i plant for horses?

I HAVE 3 TO 4 ACRES I'M GOING TO PLANT RYE GRASS THIS WINTER FOR MY HORSES. I'VE BEEN TRYING TO RESEARCH IT AND I CAN'T FIGURE OUT WHAT TYPE OF RYE GRASS WOULD BE THE BEST FOR THEM. WRENS ABRUZZI, MARSHALL, OR BULLDOG GRAZIER. I DO HAVE A SEPERATE PASTURE FOR THEM WHILE IT'S GROWING SO THAT WON'T BE A PROBLEM I JUST NEED SO SUGGESTIONS ON WHATS THE BEST KIND OF RYE FOR SOUTH CAROLINA.

  1. I prefer an Annual Ryegrass over a perenial. My horses wolfed down the Annual Ryegrass I had bought for them. It lasted a longer time being that they ate ALL of it and none was wasted, so I could feed less. Unfortunately I do not know which one would be best for South Carolina. I would contact a University with an Agriculture program, and talk to someone who specializes in forage.
  2. I would go with C - Kentucky blue grass
  3. I live in the midlands of South Carolina and we just plant winter rye. Not sure which one of your types if any of them are a winter rye but make sure it is so it can withstand the winter season.
  4. Look for a dealer that carries pasture mix made by Mo. Southern Seed. Then your done! Its very good stuff, not the cheapist on the market, but good stuff! Good luck!
