The Grass Doctor

So is there a lawn treatment that can be done to get rid of moles?

I've heard they can treat your lawn and it will poison the food that the moles eat or make it unappealing or something? Is this B.S. because i can't afford 69 traps, not to mention, they're disgusting.

  1. Get a cat, Dogs and cats can sniff them out, and dig them up and kill them. Most effective way I have ever seen, and wont cost a lot either.
  2. No, none of it works. What happens is that wherever there are moles, there are also voles. One eats those worms, one doesn't. All that happens if you poison the worms is that you have poisoned your whole yard. You can live without that. Traps work and are the only thing that actually does. Go to the agricultural section of the University of Michigan, or Auburn, or Mississippi State. All the big agricultural schools have tested and rated just about every product for house & garden there is. Every school has websites set up differently, but when I'm looking for something, I pretty much just wander around those agricultural school websites till I find what I'm looking for. I did research that whole mole/vole business one summer when I was working at a plant nursery in the far suburbs and everyone seemed to have mole/vole problems. I looked at probably 30 school websites and nearly every one said it's the traps that work the best. You are better off with the moles/voles (can't remember now which is which) that eat the worms and let them keep eating the worms.... otherwise, they abandon the tunnels and they are taken over by the other critter that doesn't eat worms but DOES eat all your plants. No matter what the labels say on all those magical thumpers, baits, poisons, juju stuff...the schools tested every bit of them and only traps work. We were trying to decide what to carry in the shop for the moles/voles people were having trouble with, so researched it. We carried only traps as that's all that actually does get rid of them. IF you live in the deep country, several yard cats is sometimes the solution. The main thing is that the animal that eats worms and tunnels is NOT the same animal that eats plants and tunnels. As I said, I can't remember now which is which, but you are better off with the worm-eating one. Another thing to remember if you have children is that whatever you put on your lawn in the way of a chemical is absorbed into skin. If your children play in the yard, any chemical you put down is absorbed. Think about that really, really hard. Most people now will put chemicals on front lawns, but nothing in the back so their children have a place to play that doesn't have chemicals.
  3. I have never heard of any lawn treatment for moles. Moles are insect eaters and occasionally burrow along just underneath the surface of the ground leaving the ground slightly tented or raised behind them but don't do any other damage The other problem you could have is gophers which leave raised mounds on the surface. Gophers are plant eaters and a major nuisance since they create a lot of damage. Gophers can be trapped or poisoned. If you want to know more about either of these pests just look them up on the internet. If you did have moles in your lawn they are probably feeding on some lawn destroying insect in the lawn. Personally I would just follow the tunnel and step on it to collapse it along the entire length.
  4. Get a Jack Russell Terrier. They were bred to kill rodents and other varmints. also they have alot of energy so they won't tire like other dogs and are very stubborn . My Jack Russell (may he rest in peace) has killed lizards, mice, sparrows, and a kitten. I caught him killing the kitten by violently shaking in it's jaws until the cat's back was broken. The reason I couldn't stop him is because once a Jack Russell has something in it's jaws you never try to take it away from him or he will bite your hand. The JRTS have British Bull dog bred in them. That is why they are so feisty, courageous ,and stubborn.
  5. Kill the grubs and the moles will move on.
  6. Getting a terrier or other live-in animal will burden you with additional responsibilities, aside from the addition of new pests (like tics). 7. hey fickle berry. if you poison the lawn then you pretty much get rid of any beneficial insects. Traps ARE disgusting. I shove a hose in their hole, turn the water on and go shopping when I come back they have pretty much scrammed. The neighbors will want to kick your butt for flooding them out too. h
  8. Buy a dozen cheap mallets and a big bang of candy. You can have your kids invite their friends over to play Whac-A-Mole, the live version. Not like that fake game you find at Chuck E Cheese that looks like this http://www.bobsspaceracers.com/whac-a-mole/html-index.htm but it does make for good practice. A handful of candy for every mole killed is a small price to pay for a mole free yard.
  9. Go to the grocery store and purchase some chocolate laxatives and also some sugary chewing gum. The laxatives will poison the moles, and the chewing gum will choke them. This also works on all subterranean rodents.
  10. cats work for us but Cayenne pepper powder also works
  11. There is in fact. You can try looking up this thing that you stick in their tunnel underground and it gives off fumes therefore killing them. This is toxic to them but won't affect you plants.hope this helps.
