- Reel type mowers are the Best way to cut grass. It slices it true with a min. or tearing at the cut. Rotary mowers cut OK but, the can leave a jagged end resulting in a brown color the next few days......Golf courses are cut with a reel type mower. Mike
- They are very efficient if you have a large area to mow and want to save time and labor expenses. They usually come in 3, 5, or 7 deck models and are ground driven, meaning that the wheel to ground contact is what turns the cutting blades. Usually a minimum of a 7 or 8 horse power tractor is required to turn the smallest of reel decks. The more horse power you have such as a 15 - 18 horse, the more decks you can tow for mowing purposes. They can give a good cut, but that all has to do with how high the grass is that you are mowing. The shorter the grass, the more groomed of a look you will get. It will not be quite as good if the grass is taller. Many manufacturers have gang reel mowing decks, you'll just have to see which ones will suit your needs. And of course what size tractor you will be using has alot to do with how many you can use. "Toro" is one I can think of right off hand and "Pro Mow" is another and I think Kubota, Jacobsen and Locke as well. The disadvantages of pull behind gang reel decks is that your maneuverability is a little more limited. If you are going to be going around obstacles while mowing, it will be a little more difficult. These types of mowing decks are most efficient when used in "open" types of mowing conditions. Good gang decks are pretty spendy and usually start around $2000.00 and up, depending on how many decks you have. However, they are somewhat cheaper than single unit riding tri-plex reel mowers.
