The Grass Doctor

How soon should I fertilize my lawn so I can get a super green lawn by early April?

I live in Chicago and I want my lawn to be perfectly green by early April. I look at the Major league Baseball fieldas and by opening even here in Chicago it looks like a lawn in late May. I do not know how they do it but I want to fertilize my lawn as soon as possible after the first day of Spring. So what is a good product for me to use and how soon can I fertilize. Thanks for the help!!

  1. You pretty much have to go by when the snow is gone and when the temps warm up, don't you??
  2. make sure you know what growing zone you live in, check with your local nursery if you don't know, If you live in the Western part of the USA, be sure to get the Sunset Western Garden book, it is like a gardeners Bible
  3. I can't image a green lawn in Chicago in April, as the temperature will not be warm enough to really get the grass going again. I would shoot for late May. There are pre-emergent fertilizers you can find at a home improvement store, but you don't want to fertilize it too much until it gets out of dormancy.
