What is the best brand of grass seed (fescue turf)?
I want to know which brand is the best (lowest % weed seeds, etc) that can be bought at Lowes, Home Depot, or your local garden shoppe, etc? I need a mix or blend of Fescue which I believe it is called "turf". I live in Southern Indiana and have an annual lowest temperature from about 0-10 degrees F. thanks!

- THe bag of seed should tell you the percentage of fescue and any other kind of seed, percentage of inert material, and percentage of weed seed-noxious or other(should be none!) Call your local extension center and they will tell you what the best mix of grass seed is for your area. Here in CT, it's a mix of Tall Fescue, Kentucky Blue, and Bentgrass. After talking to your county extension center, you will know what to look for on the bag, and not worry about what brand, though as mentioned below, Lescoe is usually the best-used at golf courses around here.
- You are probably looking for Turf Type Tall Fescue. Brand names are not as important as the species...or the name of the actual Fescue seed,i.e. Falcon, Scorpion, etc. Here is the link to the NTEP..The National Turfgrass Evaluation Program: http://www.ntep.org/ This is where they test and rate different species of Fescue. You are best to buy from a Professional Landscape Supply company like John Deere Landscapes or Lesco. They will have the best varieties blended into a bag.
