- High sun isn't a problem but the traffic is. The native type grasses such as blue grama don't take traffic very well, nor does buffalo. Normally we'd use a Kentucky bluegrass blend or a KBG mixed with perennial ryegrass. I'm not sure what they are pushing now with water conservation. Fescues are a thought. They are a bunch grass so if you are lazy about managment, they can die back into clumps, not pretty. If grown well, they can make a nice lawn. Perennial ryegrass lawns are beautiful but are not forgiving. I mentioned them as part of a mix because they germinate quickly.........a real moral boost. All in all, for a lawn lawn, where beauty and durability counts, KBG is still my favorite. To limit water use, limit where you use it. Don't make a wall to wall green carpet, put the lawn in the best growing spot, save the hills and southern & western exposures for the heat and drought tolerant plants.
- You might want to call you local county extension office and see what they recommend. I have just recently found out that grass per each area is very different I always thought that kentucky blue grass was the best in Montana but I found out that is is a cool season grass that does not do well in the heat so it does have to be mixed with another type of warm season grass to grow a nice lawn but again call your local county extension office that is what they are there for.(I hope this helped)
- I use Kentucky Blue grass except where a drought resistant grass is used and then I use Fairway Crested Wheat grass I have heard that 90 % of the lawns are Kentucky Blue grass (generally has some other grasses in it)
