The Grass Doctor

How do I add grass to my garden?

Hi, sorry didnt quite know how to phrase that. Umm, my garden is mainly pebbles, and some paving slabs. I'm going to keep the paving slabs but I want to get rid of all the pebbles and replace them with grass so my daughter can run around next spring/summer. How do I do this? I have no idea, would I just throw all the pebbles away, hope for dirt then plant grass seeds? Thanks in advance, Emilee

  1. You would need to remove the pebbles first. You should save the pebbles for another landscaping project. My suggestion would be to lay sod. You would have an "instant" lawn. Planting grass with seeds is an iffy process. You could have patches that do not come up. If your soil under the pebbles is good then you could just lay the sod on top of it. Before laying any sod or planting seeds you should get a soil sample first. You could waste alot of money by not getting the soil sample because you might choose a grass that will not grow in your soil. Contact your county agent or go to a QUALIFIED plant nursery (not a home depot or lowers) for information on obtaining a soil sample and planting process.
  2. clear all the pebbles, and keep them for another project later down the road or at the same time you are laying down sod. sod is the best way to go because you dont have to really do pain staking things like, turning the dirt and adding fertelizer or aerating the ground, and planting seeds and watering it daily, making sure its the right light for the seed yadda yadda, i can go on and on. im trying to grow grass in my backyard without planting sod.. bleh my mistake.. anyway i do think that sod would be good, beccause after clearing all the pebbles, you will be able to lay the sod, water it feed it a couple times an d with in a few weeks or days it willt ake root and you will be good to go...... orrrr .. you can plant seeds, and also take a dig out some patches of grass from other places in the yard and replant it in the area you want to grow grass, the replanted grass will take root and spread. also with seeds in the mix it will also help to grow new grass quicker. hopefully my answer helped som albeit i rambled a bit.
  3. take up the pebbles and if the soil underneath is not good get a load of topsoil, or if it is just a small area use a sack of something from a garden centre. Then just sow some grass seed
