Lawn with 2 types of grass and lots of weeds, how do I get one type of grass w/no weeds and looking good?
Ok, I just moved into my first home. It sits on 3/4 acre with the house in the middle. It is a wide property. The left and right 1/4 acres are one type of grass, there are less weeds there I am assuming it is native grass to Texas. The middle is a second type of grass, where the previous owners put sod down, there are lots of weeds there. None of the grass is growing yet, I have no clue what type it is. Like is said in the initial question. I would like to get one type of grass with no weeds. I don't have the money to sod the 3/4 acres, is there a hearty seed I can lay down to take over the yard, and something to kill the weeds. Thank you for your help.

- it's only a guess; but i would venture that the grass in the middle is saint augustine. it is a high maintenance grass needing lots of water. pull the weeds it will be work put it will be better than killing everything. the grass on the sides, does it creep? that is does it have runners on or just below soil level that just keep spreading. get down on your knees, if it looks something like a vine crawling across the ground you are in luck. it's not going to happen over night; but cut plugs out of that grass, a post hole digger does nice. just cut a plug out of that good grass, replant it in an already prepared hole on that center section. fill the hole where you pulled that plug plug from level. water both spots, some fertilizer will help bot spots. be sure to keep that plug you planted watered. take the plugs from the back of the property where they won't show. The more plugs you plant the faster the center will fill in; if the sides are a native grass it will out grow the saint augustine. sounds like a lot of work and it is; but get started now and all should fill in in about a year or two.
- Before we go into what to plant and how to plant, let's take a look at the desired results. Questions: Do want or need 3/4 acre of grass to water, mow, weed (weeds will always be a problem) and trim? - If so then proper mowing, and nutrition will help the grasses grow dense. The regular mowing will keep many weeds from setting seed. Some weeds like clover can survive mowing. In fact they love it! Would 2000-3000 sq.ft. be an ok yard. - Remember, lawn mowers emit unfiltered emissions right into the atmosphere. The EPA says that 17 million gallons of gas are spilled each year from lawn mowers. Would a naturally green mat of soft plant material such as grasses and other species be OK? - Consider reducing your lawn area and reducing your pollution and work. Use other types of pawn species like clover and naturally occurring plants. As long as it's green and ok to walk on go with it! http://versicolor.ca/lawns/docs/clover.html Join an online community of landscape and garden pros concerned about climate change. - blue grass seeds and lots of water in the heat of the summer weeds will die as grass overtakes em
