how does keeping the pH at a relatively low level?

in fertilizer mixtures with urea and ammonium phosphates reduce escape of ammonia? rephrase: how does a low pH prevent ammonia from escaping from ammonium phosphates?

  1. Ammonia is the only alkali gas known to man.....low pH is acidic. If the pH of ammonia is not favoured, then this would reduce its escape. If the pH is kept low (acidic)...an alkali (high pH) gas would not be able to escape very often in the reaction.
  2. At acidic pH ammonia is present as ammonium ion (ammonium salts) so is not free ammonia which is volatile (gas)
