The Grass Doctor

How come some grasses smell really good when cut and other grasses smell horrible when cut?

I noticed that certian types of grass smell really good when cut like Floratam St. Augustine. There is a type of cool season grass that smells really bad when cut it makes me nauseous. What causes the diffrences in smell?

  1. Hmmm I've never noticed that! I guess it could be due to a few outside factors. It's probably not the grass itself, but humidity could affect the way it smells. Like how it rain smells good for example. In places like Washington though, it rains all the time so it tends to smell more moldy because it's always wet. So weather can affect the smell. Also, what is in the grass can affect it. When my neighbors mow their lawn it smells awful because they have 3 dogs and never clean up after them, so it's stirring up a bunch of decomposing dog poop, and smells even worse when it's hot.
