  1. You will want to start an LLC most likely. Im not sure about in New Jersey, but in New Mexico and LLC is a separate entity so if someone sues my business they cannot get my personal assets. Then, google "New Jersey Articles of Organization. That is what you will need to start your LLC. Then, get your EIN from the federal Gov, its free and only takes a minute online, and you need to get a business license from your local government, i.e. your county. There is a lot of information you need to learn but just remember to keep it organized. Get a large binder and any information you get keep it in there and organized. That is what I did and it has become a great reference because I know what I need, where to find it, and its accurate. I takes a bit to learn how things work, but in the end, knowing and having the binder is a major time saver. Also, you will need to learn about merchant accounts to accept credit cards.
  2. Hi, You'll need a state contractors license which is now mandatory. It applies to all self employed businesses, painter, carpenter, land scaper etc. State of NJ web site may have answers as to what type fits you best.
