The Grass Doctor

Has anyone had their dogs eat a lot of grass on a Blue Buffalo diet?

We have been feeding our 2 dogs, Bitsie (cockapoo, age 6) and Gretchen (red doberman, age 1), Blue Buffalo for about 3 months and it seems like they are eating grass every chance they get. Gretchen eats more grass than Bitsie. Gretchen has a slight skin condition which is more common in red, blue and fawn dobermans. Has anyone had their dogs eat a lot of grass on a Blue Buffalo diet? I should probably say that Gretchen's skin not flaky but she does have a thin coat and sheds a lot.

  1. My dog eats grass too and she is on Blue Buffalo.
  2. well change what you are giving them to eat, duh!
  3. My dog eats the blue buffalo blue wilderness and has been on this for some time. He rarely eats grass and when he does it's only when he has an upset stomach. It may be something else that's upsetting your dogs so you may want to check with your vet about it.
  4. I haven't noticed our maltepoo eating grass, but he has very loose stools on Blue Buffalo. We have only had him about 3 weeks, so I am trying to give him time to adjust, but I think a diet change may be in the future. Update: Funny that I responded to this a couple of days ago because this morning when I took our puppy out for a walk, he started eating grass like he was starving. It was crazy! I called the vet who told me that it sounded like the food was not agreeing with him or he wasn't getting the nutrition he needed from it. We are going to gradually change him over to Science Diet and see if that helps. BTW - we were using BB Lamb Puppy formula.
  5. I have never fed Blue Buffalo, but I just have to say that actually, skin conditions are not common in red Dobermans at all. The skin condition you are thinking of is Color Dilution Alopecia, and it is passed on through the dilute gene, which the reds do not have. If your red Dobie is having skin issues, I'd see a vet to find out what it is since it's likely to be something else much more serious since reds do not have the genetic predisposition to the skin issue that the blues and fawns do. Color Dilution Alopecia is a benign issue, however, other skin issues that are likely to blame here are not benign, so if you haven't already it would be smart to have the red girl thoroughly checked over to figure out what's really going on since she doesn't carry the gene responsible for CDA. http://www.italiangreyhound.org/pages/702healthpages/cda.html http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/Diseases/dermatology/colour%20dilution%20alopecia.htm Added: If her coat is thin, please have her checked for low thyroid. That is very common in Dobermans and could be why her coat is thinning. It's also very easily treated with a cheap daily pill.
  6. None of my dogs do except on fairly rare occasions which probably have nothing to do with BB but something else they ate. It might be a too rich for them esp. the dobe puppy but I would switch to grain free formula whether it is BB Wilderness or another brand in a few months to help with skin dilution issue. I had a blue dane & it can be managed.
