  1. You should mow your lawn when it grows 1/2 to 1 inch and keep the deck of the mower at 3". Grass grows at different rates throughout the year so you just gotta go by how shaggy it looks. Keeping your grass 3 inches tall will reduce the weeds and make your lawn healthier. The best time to mow is when it is dry. Some areas get a lot of dew so wait until the lawn has dried then mow it. For environmental reasons you should mow at dusk to help the ozone layer. Watering the lawn should be early morning so it has time to soak in before the sun cooks it. Watering at night causes it to stay wet too long and rots it.
  2. political green is not turf green. Use Bama or buffalo grass to reduce maintenance by about 2/3, use electric mower(gas burners have no catalytic converter and have emissions that equal a family sedan),and if you feel the grass is long, wait a couple of days. The neighbors can cut it for you if it bothers them.Avoid mowing from 11:00am to 4:30pm.
  3. The best advice I ever received about lawn mowing: Mow high. Mow often. Keeping your grass taller allows for a bit more dry/drought resistance. Cut it too short and one hot day can kill your lawn. (NB: The type of grass / climate / precipitation are other factors you need to consider.) Mow it often and it will always look manicured, regardless of the quality of your lawn.
