The Grass Doctor

mites in my cat grass soil? help please!!?

I planted cat grass seeds in some all purpose soil a few days ago in a highly indoor (top floor condo far away from outdoor plants) planter. I have and inch or so of sprouting, but some of the blades look kinda purple? I looked really close and dug around a little and I found tiny, TINY WHITE BUGS!! They are crawling around in the soil mostly, not on the top. They remind me a little of ant larvae if you ever seen those. How could my soil have caught them? I don't even get flies up here! Other details you might need: I live in southern Cali a few blocks from the beach. I used multi-grass organic cat seeds, and cat nip. I used Black Gold all purpose potting soil enriched with multicote plant food. For flowers and vegetables. Also is this soil okay for cats? I figured if it was okay for veggies it would be okay for them. Could the bugs have come in the soil? Do you have any idea what kind of bugs they are and how to deal with them concerning my cats will be eating the grass. yuuuuuck! I am disgusted by bugs! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!! Make sure the bugs werent from the soil! Call the place you got it from. I just planted some and didnt get tiny bugs. I planted it outside too. I too live in So cal. Thanks Lizzie! I doubt the store will know anything about it, it's just a small store on a military base. I suppose I could call the company though. It's really creeping me out. I HATE bugs, and I don't want them to hurt my cat grass or my kitties. :( I meant to put quotes around what you said, lol! I had some leftover soil. I just put a 2 tablespoons of it on a plate and sifted through it. I didn't see any bugs. I wet it and put it far from the infested soil. I'm going to see if this seedless mix catches some of the bugs. Maybe fungus gnat larvae? I think I saw I tiny black fly thing in here before. The revolting pictures I have seen look much larger although they are prob zoomed in. I don't notice a black cap on them either....??? These things are so tiny, they might only be 2 mm. Digital..: I don't think I can use pesticides because I am going to be giving this to my cats to roll around in and eat. I have found one that might be okay though, what do you all think about using Diatomaceous earth? Safe for my cats to roll in, and possibly eat a little? Also that link you gave me sent me to a homepage that said nothing about my situation :( OneBear4...: I obviously don't want to toss it if at all possible, I have a huge bag of seeds and don't want to waste supplies if I don't have to. Are you trying to say that I am not going to be able to fix this, and that it's too much of a danger to my cats? If you are going to suggest being wasteful, please explain. Also what if it is fungus gnat larvae or something that will probably just come back if I start all over? THANKS EVERYONE! More answers would be appreciated!

  1. Make sure the bugs werent from the soil! Call the place you got it from. I just planted some and didnt get tiny bugs. I planted it outside too. I too live in So cal.
  2. Use some pesticides or some sprays to kill them otherwise they will harm your crops or flowers.
  3. toss it out, bleach the container and start with new seeds from a different source and new soil from a different source if you are into organic when they don't treat things with chemicals sometimes you get bugs was tring to give u the most sure way of not having insects without using any chemicals
