The Grass Doctor

What type of grass can I plant that will flourish in a shaded area such as under a tree?

  1. Usually none.As grass only grows well in sunlight. But you could get something like Mercury Bay Weed to grow. Looks great under a tree, and never needs mowing. Ask your garden center.
  2. Depends on where you live. If you have a warm season turf you pretty much S.O.L., but if you live in a part of the country that utilizes a "cool" season grass, you can try one of the "fescue" varieties, preferably the "fine" fescues as they are the most shade tolerant... http://www.american-lawns.com/grasses/fine_fescue.html http://www.american-lawns.com/grasses/cool_season_grasses.html ...Billy Ray
  3. Choice of grass type is not only where you will plant it but also depends on the area you live. Two articles which describe different types of grasses. You may find your answer there.
  4. just bought some from Home Depot Pennington dense shade made for under trees
  5. cooch, no seriously it is a grass, drought and shade tolerant, we love it here in Aussie land, but be warned it has runners and grows into really strange places. It is that tough that my Kelpie has a hard time destroying it.
