How do you get rid of crab grass?

My yard started out with nice green grass, but over the years it has become overtaken with crab grass. Is there a way to get rid of the crab grass so that the good grass can grow again? And how cam I protect my grass from turning into crab grass? What is crab grass? Is it a weed?

  1. you gotta pull it out me and my dad did it for over an hour
  2. Boiling water and melted butter... Scotts has a formula to get rid of crab grass. Check that out.
  3. It's a weed by definition (you don't like it). Crab grass can only be truly defeated ecologically. You need to promote the grass, not just attack the crabgrass.
  4. Try any brand of crab grass seed killer -- apply NOW... available at any home and garden store or department... just bought a bag today, in fact, at a Wal-mart... key is to put it down now, before crab grass germinates... if that happens, you're stuck tolerating it for another year or pulling it out by the roots...
  5. Crab grass doesn't like coffee grounds, along with other weeds. Tea that has been steeped for an hour or so, will also work. The coffee grounds also help to keep cats out of your garden..... and it's good for garden too!!! See, even your garden needs coffee now and then. Try it, it works!!!
  6. All Season makes a lawn food plus crabgrass eliminator. I believe that if it is truly crabgrass, it is an annual and there by controlled by a pre-emergent. However, there are many weed grasses. Some are perennial and controlled with a different herbicide. I would recommend you take a clump into a reputable garden center or a college extension and have it identified.
