How do I plant grass seed?
I live in Southern California and it is in the 60's this week. I just planted grass seed (contractor's mix) and raked in the seeds. If I can still visually see seeds laying on top of the soil is this bad? Should I not be able to see any seeds at all and should they all UNDER the dirt? I raked in the seeds but I can still see a bunch sitting on top of the dirt. Do I HAVE to buy mulch to throw on top of the seeds that are exposed or can I get away without mulch on top? Thanks!

- nope, you're supposed to be able to see the seeds. DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT place mulch on top because it's NOT a good idea.
- They should not be under the dirt. They need light to germinate. Mulch helps keep moisture in the soil, and can reduce how often you have to water, and also usually means fewer seeds become birds' lunches. Straw is the favorite - as it allows light through. You don't have to use mulch - but you might need to keep a close eye on the moisture - and water more often.
- you just leave them there and they will grow in my apartments we do the same thing. make sure they get alot of water.
- just dig it up about 2 inch and put your no it and then raked the seed in and keep it wet till your seed comes up till it about 3 inch tall good luck. no mulch. good luck
- Slit seeding is really best but using a spreader to lay out the seeds is fine. It's best to add a little straw if the lawn is new but if it isn't, just make sure you water new seeds often. Mulch isn't going to be much help so I wouldn't waste the money on it. Sunlight won't get through the mulch. Water is the key for new lawns and seeds. My husband seeds twice a year and slit seeds every other.
