What type of grass should i plant I live in Tenn.?
My back yard is shady in places, it also is somewhat rocky. I would think I have clay. Right now its nothing but mud due to rain, then in dry weather its a dust bowl.. I live in Nolensville Tenn. I think I''m in the southeast. Help !

- Oh, that's too easy.. Just be ready for a wide variety of answers. Maybe some kind of Bluegrass, but I really don't know.
- Georgia here, with the same rocky/muddy/dry dust bowl soil you have in TN. To have a beautiful, lush green lawn, you will have to start by bringing in some top soil, then adding organic matter to the top soil. Then sow grass seed that is designed to grow in both sun and shade, since your 'back yard is shady in places'. Drought tolerant grass seed is a must for the TN. area too. This article will give you more details on how to turn your rocky/muddy/dry dust bowl back yard into a lush green oasis with turf grasses and some alternative grasses that grow well in difficult landscapes.
- OKAY, this isn't going to be too much of help but I figured I'd give it a shot. Go to home depot, we live in clarksville tn, and our backyard is like clay and VERY rocky. We told the guy there, and we have a mixture of two different seeds. One is a kind of grass that shoots up very fast, but it get's burnt by the sun easily, and the other kind is a thicker hardier grass, so the one that your yard comes up fast, and once the thicker grass comes is is easier sustained. We live in a brand new house, this is our second spring and we are still trying to get grass to grow, I was told it will take about three years to get a full yard.
