The Grass Doctor

When to add grass seeds to lawn patches?

  1. After the danger of frost is over.
  2. For most zones, it would be early fall. You want to avoid the heat of summer. You can do it in late spring as well, but late summer/early fall is best. Mulch the seeded areas with straw (wheat or pine) to help hold in moisture.
  3. Late Summer / early Fall is best, but you can seed in Spring, too. Most seed varieties germinate when the constant soil temperature is near 60-degrees F. If you live in a cold climate, wait until overnight temps are in the 50's for several nights in a row, then the soil temp will be about right. Keep seed continuously damp until it sprouts.
