The Grass Doctor

What kind of grass seed should I use for a partial shade area just cleared of ground cover?

I just cleared an area of ground cover (dead leaves). The area gets some sun but is often in the shade. It is primarily dirt now. Any tips on what type of grass seed would be good and what other things I would need to do to grow grass effectively in this area? Thanks!

  1. i personally like Bermuda. its really pretty and likes partial shade. Does require a little more water then usual grass but it looks 10X better.
  2. It depends on where you are located. I am in Indiana. I like to use a mix of bluegrass and annual rye grass. I hate fescue of any kind. They often try to sell you this in the stores but is has large clumpy roots that come to the top of the ground and has a broad leaf. It also grows faster than most other plants. The bluegrass takes longer to come up. The annual rye comes up in a short time and holds the bluegrass seed in place while it germinates. The annual rye evenutally dies out leaving a beautiful bluegrass lawn that is easy to care for. Whatever you plant, you should fertilize lightly and also put a light covering of straw on when you plant. As the grass comes up, remove the straw with a leaf rake.
