The Grass Doctor

can you mix water with dry fertilizer to make liquid fertilizer?

Public Comments

  1. Depends what kind of dry fertilizer. Some will dissolve in water (and are designed for you to do that, before applying - like Miracle-Gro). Some don't dissolve (Like Plant-Tone), and what you'll end up with is a wet mess that's difficult to spread. Apply the fertilizer as the instructions say - if it doesn't say to dilute in water, then don't try.
  2. Yes. There are specific products that do that. Over here, Yates THRIVE is one.
  3. As long as the container says it is water soluble and gives recommended strengths to mix with water. The other types can be mixed with water to make a tea but takes forever to completely break down and could cause burning of the roots. Use the water soluble for potted and house plants and the other for the farm.
  4. DO NOT MIX UNKNOWN DRY FERTILIZER WITH WATER AND POUR IT ON THE PLANT. It can easily burn the roots and kill the plant. If you don't know what it is, throw it away. Organic products help to enrich the soil and usually do not damage the roots. READ the label and follow the instructions. Some fertilizers are meant to be mixed with water. Others are either mixed with the soil or sprinkled around the plant and watered in. Best to use at half-strength and apply a little more often. Many fertilizers accumulate in the soil as salts and are harmful to the plant, so use very carefully or use organic products.
