What are the details of Scotts 4 Step Fertilizer Program?
Hey everyone, does anyone have any information or a link that lays out the Scott's Fertilize program . What I'm looking for is step by step information; what kind of Scott's Fertilizer to put down and when. I'm in Connecticut. Thanks in advance. Happy Growing..

- I work with a former brand manager at Scotts and he said the most important one to use is the winterizer. Then a turf builder in late spring. The other ones are so tough to time correctly that its typically not worth while using. But to answer your question Step 1 - Crabgrass preventer, apply early spring (Right when the forsythias are starting to bloom) Step 2 - Weed Preventer, apply early summer Step 3 - Turf builder, apply mid summer Step 4 - Winterizer, apply mid fall I've been told to use the holidays as a guage as well. Labor Day, Independence Day, Memorial day -- this skips the crabgrass preventer step (not everyone needs this).
- first...check out jonathan green lawn products...they are only sold at independent garden centers but its a better product. they have a 4 step program as well as other lawn care products...and no i dont work for them. lime first. your soils ph can effect the performance of your lawn. lime can be used before or at the same time as new seeds and or fertilizer. step 1 is fertilizer with crabgrass preventer. it should be applied before crabgrass germinates. mid to late april should be good. dont use it if you intend to lay any new seed. (there is a step 1 that can be used in conjunction with new seed but most are double the price of standard step 1) step 2 is weed and feed which again is lawn fertilizer this time combined with broad leaf weed control. good for use at or around memorial day. helps kill and prevent most common lawn weeds. step 3 is fertilizer with insect control. good for use at or around 4th of july. unless you have an insect problem this is one you might be able to skip and just go with a turf builder (fertilizer with nothing added) step 4 is winter survival. this is just a straight fertilizer but it is higher in phosphorous which helps the lawn store energy for the winter. can be applied after labor day but before the ground freezes entirely. if you notice dead patches in the lawn, birds or skunks in the yard, check for grubs. peel back the dead turf and if you see small white grubs apply grub control. a season long grub control will ensure that when the grubs are back again at the end of the summer they die instead of destroying your lawn again.
