- Any of those weed killing fertilizers are full of dangerous chemicals for the environment and also anything else you might plant in your yard. Even trees are negatively affected by the crap in there. We never used the weed killer fertilizers as we have trees. So I used to pick the weeds out by hand, a pain!!! Then in our local paper they started recommending organic lawn fertilizer, which some local nurseries carry. So we switched to that. And within two years, almost all the weeds are gone and the grass is much nicer. You actually use less organic fertilizer because it lasts longer. Give it a try and quit using environmental poison on your lawn.
- crabgrass are the first weed that comes out after winter so put in the Scotts Fertilizer with CrabGrass control. in summer you can put that Scotts Fertilizer with Weed Control.
- step 1, the crabgrass preventer is usually done first. however it isnt effective if the crabgrass has already started to grow (the three leaf stage). since im not sure where you live i would hate to tell you the wrong time but in the northeast now is the time for step 1(between approx. april 15 and may 1). if you already have crabgrass growing in your lawn than your on to step 2 weed control. just be sure not to use either if you have recently seeded or plan to seed the lawn because both can prevent germination of grass seeds. if you are interested in taking a more organic approach, corn gluten is now being sold as an organic weed preventer. we sell the Johnathan Green brand and so far it seems to be working pretty well for our customers. on a side note, proper ph in your soil can help keep weeds from growing and keep your lawn green and healthy. soil ph test kits are usually inexpensive and would give you a better idea of how much lime you need to put down.
- Crabgrass most certainly is a summer weed. I believe you might be thinking of annual bluegrass, which is also called Poa. I don't know which one works best. I would have to know the chemical names to help you out...and I don't feel like looking it all up. Sorry. :)
- Neither really. They are good products, but they are quick release or water soluble which means, that what is not absorbed in a day or two is washed away and you get no bennifit from. Scotts will green your lawn, but only short term. Try to find a product that has slow release and it will feed your lawn all summer long. I switched from all Scotts brand to Whitney Farms (not sure if they have it in your area, I live in WA) I now use the fert once a summer as opossed to 2-3 times with Scotts and my lawn looks better than ever! However Whitney Farms does not have any weed control products.
