- 1 = nitrous oxide. The heat fuses Oxygen and Nitrogen, which the atmosphere is composed mostly of. 2 = ammonium nitrate. The molecule contains the two ingredirnts needed for an explosive , oxodozer (nitrate) and oxidant (ammonium). This generates an inceredibly powerful shock wave as it detonates. It was what took out the OK federal building. In the 1930's a barge filled with this stuff caught fire and severly damaged several city blocks on the Texas coast. The ship was blown into such tiny bits it could never be found. 3 = check the left hand coefficients of N2+3H2 ---> 2NH3 ; these are the ratios. 1:2 ought to be the ratio of Nitrogen to Ammonia. 4 = Ammonium hydroxide is a basic ion. Ammonia combnes with water to form a weak base, NH3 + H2O = NH4OH. The hydroxyl group (OH) makes it a base. 5 = let's see ... NO. Copper and HCl = CuCl2 + H2 Nitric Acid and concentrated Br (probably not) Concentrated Copper and metallic Cu ? Cu + Cu = 2Cu (RU serious??) Copper and concentrated Nitric Acid = YES!!! 6 = Ammonia is my guess, since this homework assignment seems so full of sh---aving cream! 7 = NO. Yes, it's NO. 8 = Calcium most likley, since the pure metal would do something like: Ca + 2NH4Cl -> CaCl2 + 2NH3 + H2 The ammonia would be immediately evident by anyone whose face included a nose. Iron sulfate , FeSO4, would just form ferric ammonium sulfate and ammonium sulfate. Oxygen and ammonium chloride do not react at all. 9 = I'm not sure at all about this one. Platinum and vanadium pentoxide are well known catylists. I'd choose the vanadium, V2O5. of course I'm guessing. Homework time! 10 = Another sh---aving cream question. Magnesium nitride. I'll wager half a ton of NH4NO3 the reaction is: Mg3N2 + 6H2O -> 2NH3 + 3Mg(OH)2 Again, the ammonia would be immediately detectable.
