The Grass Doctor

Is it true grass seed is only good for the season you buy it in?

I used Jonathan Green before and liked it. Is it better than Scotts?

  1. No, the "use by" date is for maximum germination. You can use "old" seeds, but don't expect 100% germination. Haven't tried either of the brands you mentioned. Archaeologists found a 2000 year old extinct fig seed that sprouted and grew.
  2. No, the seed should still be viable for at least three years; however, the germination rate goes down the older the seed gets. Still if you have some seed left from last year, definitely use it. You should still get a good showing from it.
