What is the safest lawn fertilizer that still works well?
There are young children and pets in the neighborhood and I want to keep them all safe, but I still want a great looking lawn.

- Scott's is hard to beat. Always try to apply lawn chemicals just before a rain to wash it down into the soil. The exception is a weed killer but, there again Scott's is one that does not remain above ground as long as most - exposing humans.
- you need to 3 year old cow shit.
- Lawn is all leaves and leaves need nitrogen. Most organic lawn fertilizer should be safe just be sure to read the label. They will tell you if it is harmful to kids or pets and usually boast when it is completely safe. You will want to look for one with a high Nitrogen number (the first number) in the NPK listed on the front. 9-0-0 or 6-2-0 or something like that should be fine. Stay away from the 'big' brands as they are usually very expensive. I saw a bag of Scotts's organic lawn fertilizer for $50 when the no-name brands ran around $7 or $8.
